Robinia Themed Play

Full speed on imagination, cognition, and language development

Nature themed play is the ticket to exploring and understanding life. Using familiar connotations, children are given the opportunity to place themselves in daily situations; filling the car with gas, steering a boat, routine procedures enable children to explore the world from their own perspective. It is the small, well thought out details that trigger imaginations, for example, the addition of a credit card slot on the gas pump, that help encourage organizational skills.

In addition, the presence of an owl, a parrot, or an iguana, breaks open new thought processes and by sharing these thoughts and ideas stimulates language and the ability to communicate.

Robinia is the preferred material for KOMPAN’s nature inspired playgrounds. Known as Black Locust in its native USA, it is now an intercontinental plant, having first been introduced to Europe just over four centuries ago.

The Robinia tree itself is a triumph of nature. As a tree, at every level it performs. It grows in poor soils, it feeds nitrogen into the earth encouraging other plants, it flowers to be the source of Acadia honey, its leaves breathe out Co2. It adapts well in urban areas, gracing many boulevards and streets. When cut as timber, the stump regenerates and grows back quickly. It is highly sustainable. The timber is fine-grained, strong and resilient; it naturally repels fungi and bugs - the perfect material for long-lasting nature based playgrounds.
