Occupational Health and Safety Policy

We continuously strive to improve how we prevent, perform and manage health and safety issues in KOMPAN.

We focus on:

Occupational health and safety with regards to the prevention of occupational injuries and illnesses compliance with legal regulations with regards to occupational health and safety and other programmes of the company and regulations to which the company is committed effective and active involvement by all employees in the system of management of occupational health and safety issues.

In order to achieve these objectives, the top management of the KOMPAN company undertakes as follows:

Pursuant to the applicable organizational and work regulations, it shall integrate and coordinate OHS issues as part of the responsibilities of each and every employee. It shall identify and evaluate, on a continuous basis and in a qualified manner, any potential danger to people's health and lives, damage to technical equipment, and people's working environment. It shall adopt and implement measures to mitigate such risks and inform employees and other persons concerned about them. It shall train employees to raise awareness and knowledge of issues related to occupational health, safety, and environmental protection. It shall ensure all entities are included that are affected by KOMPAN's activities in the management of the OHS system, i.e. suppliers, customers, visitors, and the general public, and actively work with them on these issues. As a part of a continuous improvement process, KOMPAN sets and reviews OHS objectives and targets.

KOMPAN carries out continuous quality and safety audits on its control system, ensuring that safety policies and goals are constantly improved and adapted to society's demands.

KOMPAN and UN Global Compact

The UN's conventions on the fundamental rights of children mention, among other things, children's right to play and right to development. KOMPAN advocates for the same rights and one of our basic principles is that our products are instrumental in giving children this universal right to play.

From the very beginning, we at KOMPAN have contributed to making children’s living conditions better. We have worked for children's right to play and for children to learn and develop. KOMPAN has chosen to base our CSR initiative on UN's Global Compact, and we are working on the implementation of the 10 principles. We joined the UN Global Compact in 2011.

Our corporate social responsibility forms a natural part of KOMPAN - both our business and our organization. We believe that we can simultaneously create a profitable business and take on a corporate social responsibility. Therefore, it is a priority for KOMPAN that our corporate responsibility is included in all parts of the company - from development, sales, purchasing, production, and delivery, to the investments we make.

It is important for KOMPAN to comply with Danish, US, and international legislation and product standards within our business area, as well as to increase the values they are based upon. For instance, it is important to balance risk and challenge within product safety so that it is still fun, challenging, and educational to play.

Human Rights

For decades, the joy of children and adults has guided us in developing big ideas and new solutions for play and for sports. We have carefully studied children’s play and built a knowledge base that has made KOMPAN second to none in its field. From our studies, we know what motivates and develops people from infancy to adulthood at the different stages of physical development. Our insight clearly confirms that physical activity develops you as an individual, as well as developing your social skills and your ability to learn, and keeping you healthy. However, today 1 out of 4 adults and 8 out of 10 adolescents are not active. Global health care costs are increasing. Community leaders are worried and looking for ways to fight inactivity. As more people live in cities with limited space and little time for physical activity, cities have a big challenge.

At Kompan, we believe that all people regardless of age and ability, should experience the joy of moving and be offered opportunities and access to free play and exercise.

We will support and respect internationally declared human rights within our spheres of influence, and ensure that we are not accomplices to human rights abuses by:
Building competencies in relation to human rights issues in relevant parts of the organization. Making use of country analyses when evaluating the human rights situation in the countries in which we have or plan to have production facilities. Entering into a dialogue on human rights issues with the KOMPAN Group's stakeholders, including nongovernmental organizations and suppliers. Recognizing the employees' rights to unionize and to take part in collective bargaining. Arranging for employees to meet with the management to discuss work-related issues in the countries in which the employees do not have the free choice of a trade union for legislative reasons, or an established trade union system is not possible.

We strive to fight all kinds of forced labor by:
Ensuring that all employees have employment contracts or are subject to agreements that specify their terms of employment and terms of termination, showing the voluntary aspect of the employment.

We strive to fight child labor by:
Ensuring that children are only employed if they are older than the age for completing compulsory school, older than 15 years, and if they are older than the local legal minimum age of work.Besides that, young people between 15 and 18 years old, must not deal with hazardous work, not work during the night, and should have more breaks than employees over the age of 18. This also applies to companies that supply goods to KOMPAN. In special circumstances, employment of children at the age of 14 is possible, if this is allowed according to ILO convention No. 138, and if local conditions mean that having a job means the child will have the best possible protection and development. However, the job should be a light and secure part-time employment and education should be provided at the same time. In such a case, the employment should take place in close cooperation and dialogue with the child and his/her family as well as with approved international or national organizations that safeguard the interests of children.

We will abolish discrimination in the workplace by:
Ensuring that non-objective discriminatory treatment does not occur with regard to employment, careers, further education, dismissals etc. Being reluctant in the use of health tests. Only the most necessary tests required by legislation or by the employees should be carried out. Health test shall not be used for discriminatory purposes.

We will work against all corruption, including extortion and bribery.

Corruption is one of the most substantial obstacles to free trade and also the biggest threat to eliminating poverty in the world.  Participating in corruption and bribery is not compatible with being employed at KOMPAN. All employees at KOMPAN should be careful not be party to situations where cooperative partners participate in corruption or bribery. If there is a reason to suspect this is the case, the immediate manager should be told immediately. It is mandatory to report to one's superior if gifts are being accepted or offered that are not appropriate and go beyond legitimate business purposes. KOMPAN has issued a Business Ethics policy detailing how social responsibility shall be put into action, including which guidelines to follow as a KOMPAN employee. All employees must comply with the Business Ethics policy.

KOMPAN is committed to a sustainable development for the planet. This means that we choose material for our play and sports solutions that have a minimal impact on the environment. Whenever possible, KOMPAN uses wood from FSC® Certified (FSC® C004450) sources, and we avoid suppliers who provide wood from questionable or controversial sources. Consequently, KOMPAN products are manufactured from materials and by technologies that have a minimal impact on the environment. Our materials are evaluated by their environmental impact before we use them.

KOMPAN contributes to the development of environmentally justifiable technologies, materials, management procedures, and behaviors. As a part of a continuous improvement process, we set and review environmental objectives and targets. KOMPAN carries out continuous quality and environmental audits of its control system, ensuring that environmental policies and goals are constantly improved and adapted to society's demands. We train our employees on the company's environmental impact, and, we at KOMPAN, are encouraged to actively improve our efforts.

Health and Safety

All children or adults must be safe when using KOMPAN solutions. In order to safeguard our users, we continuously do quality and safety audits of our control system, ensuring that safety policies and goals are constantly improved and developed.

We strive to eliminate occupational injuries and illnesses and integrate and coordinate OHS issues as part of the responsibilities of each and every employee. We identify and evaluate potential risk to people's health and lives, damage to technical equipment, and people's working environment. We adopt and implement measures to mitigate such risk and inform employees and other persons concerned about them.
