St. Petersburg, FL
Welcome to the Natural Robinia Boyd Hill Playground at the Boyd Hill Nature Preserve in St. Petersburg, Florida!
The City of St. Petersburg sought out to create a play solution that provided children with the opporunity to learn about their environment by creating a space that encouraged hands-on-play with natural elements, enhanced the existing space, and was ecologically sensitive.
Sitting on a 245 acre protected area, we knew our Natural Robinia playground structures were a perfect fit for this project. Our team worked closely with Booth Design Group and the City of St. Petersburg Parks and Recreation to plan and develop this play space. We started by incorporating local plants and animals into the design to enhance opportunities for learning through play. We then began designing custom Robinia Parkour structures to parallel the natural curves of the trees and the organic layout of the park. In order to provide information on the benefits of the natural resources in the park, we created custom Robinia signs to complement the playground.
Keeping Nature in Nature
"We worked closely with the City of St. Petersburg to generate concepts. We've designed a few of these so we had a good idea what we wanted to see. We knew that it had to fit the space, a nature preserve. It includes a wooden area surrounded by a creek, a little bridge and retaining wall, so we steered the project to a very natural playground concept. The city was eager to follow through when they saw the ideas we generated. We went right to bidding and helped the city pick the ideal natural playground. A few features set it apart from modern playgrounds including limited fencing, plastic and metal." - Jamie Beatty, Principal at Booth Design Group
It was built with the intent to blend into the preserve and keep kids in touch with nature.
