Welcome to the Imagination Station playground at Ballard Park in Ridgefield, CT where accessibility meets play value through universal design!
When officials in Ridgefield Connecticut decided to renovate the town’s “Imagination Station” playground at Ballard Park, they wanted to create an accessible playground with a focus on inclusive play. They chose KOMPAN as their playground design partner, but they were more than a little surprised when KOMPAN delivered a proposal that did not include any ramps. After further consultations with KOMPAN – and encouraged by talks with a number of physical therapists and parents of physically disabled children – the town’s playground committee decided to go with the innovative and universal KOMPAN design.
A key element in the non-traditional design was a rope course, which provides a challenging play environment. This was mixed with more traditional structures, each with its own purposes, such as promoting balance, coordination or social interaction. The community responded very enthusiastically to the innovative, inclusion-promoting rope course mixed with a selected variety of additional activity solutions. Now named one of America’s five most inclusive playgrounds, the playground committee, and the town are even happier
